Ladies who excel in a particular food dish, set up a small table & chairs outside their front room & start cooking on tiny gas rings or charcoal braziers....delicious food produced in minutes!
Done a nails or beauty course? Open you own front room beauty shop...
There is a little old man a few doors down who's front room is strewn with bits & pieces of household appliances...he fixes fans, irons, blenders & the like...
At the end of the alley is a juice stand....not even a front room to operate from....just a table set up with a blender, a plastic barrel of ice, & a selection of fruit....for the grand total of 60c they produce the best smoothies in Saigon (or so they advertise...but judging by the milling throngs at night, it must be true...lol)
There are duplicates of food stalls, but they seem to have it worked out between themselves to ensure everyone makes a living...my coffee seller across the alley opens up at 5am....toils away busily to 11am, when she shuts up shop....another seller a few doors down then opens up...& so on , with the last coffee seller closing around midnight!
Is this Communism at its best?
Along with all this alley commerce going on, there are the itinerant sellers...the alley rings day & night with the individual calls of each speciality....in the morning the call of "in nah meh" (that is what it sounds like anyway...lol) signals the arrival of the bread man on his bike...fresh crusty bread rolls, croissant, garlic bread, fruit pastries, all nestled in baskets all over his bike...
In the mornings there are also veges, fruit, ice available from the back of pushbikes or motorbikes...
Mid morning on there is a stream of people selling household items...towels, brooms, duvets etc
After lunch, the snacks start arriving, in time for the afternoon rest hours (because of the heat everyone relaxes/sleeps between 1pm- 4pm)...steaming corn on the cob, fried chicken feet ,delicious tiny spring rolls (fried on the spot on charcoal on the back of the bike) icecream, & a constant supply of things I have no idea about...lol
Nightfall brings out the speciality foods...steaming hot shellfish, ricey desserts, fried octopus & squid...& again some foods of which I have no idea about, & at the moment have no desire to acquaint myself further with...LMAO
All this works so well, & makes you wonder why it wouldnt work in my country...there are NO unemployed here!
Oh, of course...it wouldnt work at home because we are so tied up in red tape around health & safety, council regulations & the like... we are so germ phobic...we are so against anything outside the box, that nothing would ever get off the ground!
Pity, isnt it?
