I was sitting at a restaurant, out on the main street , last evening... enjoying a thunder/ rainstorm raging....
I had an iced chocolate, my cigarettes, & a book...life is good!
Sitting at a table next to mine, was a middle aged guy that I have seen around before, but never spoken to (mainly because he is usually roaring drunk)...
He suddenly struck up conversation, asking how long I have been here, where was I from, & what did I do here workwise..
After a SHORT conversation, he offered me a job....teaching in the small English school, he owns...WTF???????
(As an aside, this is not the first job offer been made to me...teaching English...)
Normally I would just say "thanks, but no thanks...I have worked all my life, now is the time to relax"..
But, I was amazed that someone would offer me a job teaching (an important profession, moulding young minds) on such short aquaintance....no questions re my competance or qualifications...bizarre!
So I queried him on the criteria for teaching English...
He told me that he had noticed that I was always reading, & I spoke English....that was enough for the job!!!!
I read about 4 books a week, & do consider myself well read...I read anything & everything, subject matter depending on my mood... But...he didnt know that...
For all he knew I might only read Mills & Boon romantic stodge, or books on beekeeping...hardly a well rounded curriculum for teaching English!
I pointed this out, but he brushed that aside, by saying that the students wouldnt know that, & he didnt actually care what they learnt...as long as they paid their fees!!!!
He obviously was also absolutely disinterested in the personality of people he was hiring...
I am easily bored, easily frustrated, impatient, ...not at all a fine recipe for teaching anything!
But this wasnt a problem as far as he was concerned...it would apparently be their problem how they dealt with these traits of mine!
I dont know what the fees are for these private English schools, but judging by the fact that the teachers make $20-$25 an hour (US $...a huge wage in Vietnam), the fees must be high!
I was absolutely furious!
Education here is a HUGE thing...parents will scrimp & save, often going without almost everything for themselves, in order to get their kids to school....no free education here!
At the end of our alley, by my morning coffee stall, lives a very poor family...one battered pushbike for the mother to go to the market, no TV, they sit outside their neighbour's house , at night, watching the TV , through their door....They wear the same clothes day in & day out...I have seen the Mother coming back from the market each morning, with some rice & a few veges...never any meat...
These people are dirt poor!
& yet...every morning, out pop their two little girls, in pristine school uniforms, faces scrubbed, & shiny pigtails bouncing...off to school!
There is a big sacrifice being made here, just for the kids to attend a local school, in a class of 50 kids, one teacher...
Imagine the going without that goes on, to send your child to a private school, to learn English, in order to improve their lot in life...
& they are rewarded by guys like this bozo, hiring random Joe Blogs off the street...with no teaching experience, & little interest other than the good wages!
It is beyond disgusting!!!!
