It is only 157 kilometres between the two but it took 7.5 hrs!!!
Why? because the Cambodian Govt, in all its wisdom(sic) are doing roadworks ALL THE WAY!
Not just a short stretch at a time, then onto the next...
Oh No...lets dig up the entire 157 kms at once....in the DRY season!
Imagine the worst, rutted, unsealed , backcountry road, in the middle of summer, in NZ....add wall to wall traffic in both directions, & you will get some idea of the conditions....
At one stage the bus was inching along at about 10kms, because you simply could not see the road ahead, for the dust swirling about...
(the one positive was that the driver could not drive in the normal breakneck, dangerous manner they normally do, in Sth East Asia...lol)
There were hundreds of poor wee buggers toiling away...no fancy rollers, graders, etc here...digging with shovels, rolling hand rollers , little hot asphalt carts, & wheelbarrows full of gravel ...with tshirts wrapped around their heads & faces...in 40 degree plus heat!!!!!
As I nestled back into my seat, with the air con blasting on me, I certainly counted my blessings!
As we trundled along, adding to the clouds of dust, I saw country women hanging out washing in their yards on the side of the road...WTF?
It would have been dirtier when dry than when they started!
About 10 km's out from Siem Reap, it was as though we had entered another world...big wide, sealed, tree lined
boulevards....an oasis of calm & cleanliness!
I'm sorry I cant provide you with photos...
As is part of my character I never go (or leave) anywhere without leaving something behind...lol
In this case, I forgot to bring my camera!!!!
And in this case, it is a tragedy....Siem Reap is so beautiful!
Especially my hotel...a small hotel of just 25 rooms, it is nestled in amazing gardens, crammed with statues, water features, lanterns, orchids hanging from the trees, hammocks, windchimes, etc etc...a magical place!
(for my lovely daughter in law in OZ...you would be beside yourself! There are elephant bits & bobs EVERYWHERE...statues, huge pots with elephant carvings, elephant hangings etc etc)....
The inside of the hotel is just as beautiful...I have never stayed in a hotel as lovely as this...all for $19 a night!!!!
I am well happy!
