People do NOT eat dog in Vietnam!
Well....that is not quite true...... in NORTH Vietnam there are a few restaurants that specialize in this, but it is very expensive & for special occasions, & only a select sector of the community indulge in this...
In the South (where I am) they do not eat dog & never have!
The reason for this anomaly is that during & after the period of trying to eject the French from 1945, which gradually escalated into the Vietnam War, which carried on until 1975, the North were on the point of starvation, & virtually ate anything that moved!
Dogs, rats, bats, insects...you name it, if it wasnt nailed down, it ended up on a plate!!!
The South, being the food bowl of the country, fared much better...the climate & the lush growing conditions meant that the South always had food....which is why the Ho Chi Minh Trail was established... to ferry, predominantly food up the country to the starving North...
Which is also why the poor old South was also massively bombed with defolients like Agent Orange....not only to flush the VietCong out of the jungle, but to destroy the Norths food sources...
Sooooo...Fido is mostly safe...your next door neighbour is not going to leap upon your precious fluffy bundle of joy & BBQ him for tea!
As it happens, the FEW restaurants in the North that do specialize in dogmeat, also offer rat, bat, worms etc...but funnily enough no one seems to cause a furore about these creatures being eaten!
Everyone who knows me, know that I am a fervent animal lover, but as I think more about this matter, I wonder why all the indignation....
We eat lambs, goats, rabbits, (all very cute in their own right) without a thought...so why not dog?
It seems very hypocritical....if you feel that strongly about it, you should be vegetarian!
I intended writing about the dogs of Vietnam today, but have gone off on a tangent...lol
Never mind...next post will cheer you dog lovers up!
